Water heater not starting altogether

Water heaters can sometimes fail to start initially. If once you try to start the heater, absolutely nothing happens, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Check voltage on the heater’s harness on the heater’s side (pins 1 and 2 on the heater’s connector). Turn the heater ON and make sure that the voltage is still correct.
  2. If the voltage is correct, then try to start the heater by connecting the red and yellow wires together manually. If the above helps, replace the controller (this option is suitable only for newer generation Espar heaters).
  3. If the heater still does not start, then the ECU is locked or the start-up self-test fails.
  4. If the above fails, retrieve diagnostic codes from the controller or diagnostic tool and register a ticket with Heatso. In-depth installation pictures will be required.
