Why do you need a muffler?

The muffler is optional, but without it, the heater can be quite loud — around 100 dB. With the muffler, the noise drops to about 60 dB.

To give you some context: 60 dB is roughly the sound of a normal conversation, while 100 dB is about as loud as a basic lawn mower.
